I have listed below some of the questions that you may be thinking about.
Before embarking on a route of hypnotherapy, it is really important to ask the right questions! Have a look at these below if there are still unanswered questions; why not write them down on a scrap of paper, you can ask the therapist when you call.
Will you be able to hypnotise me?
There are a very small proportion of people whom we don't use hypnotherapy with, these people include those who have various serious mental illnesses. We wouldn't hypnotise a person who had degrees of senility or severe learning difficulties. Everyone else will be able to undergo hypnosis, 'if they choose to'. Sometimes a person will visit a Hypnotherapist due to pressure from a relative to give up smoking or lose weight, however if that person does not want to give up, or will not follow the instructions, then it will be a waste of time and money. Basically if you can follow simple instructions such as 'close your eyes' 'relax' and you really want to reap the benefits of the therapy, then there is no reason why you can't.
How do I choose a therapist?
There are so many therapists around, how do choose the right one for you? Well this is a tricky one, but I would advise you first and foremost to go with word of mouth. If this isn't possible, look on the Internet and get a feel for those therapists in your area. ALL therapists should have gone through a form of training and should belong to their particular hypnotherapy association, ask them about the association (it should be on their website and literature) Some Hypnotherapist carry more than one qualification, this along with life experience will help them to help you in a much wider way as they will be able to bring knowledge from different areas.
What if I don't wake up?
The question about not waking up is a common one, as it belongs to one of the most common misconceptions that hypnosis is a state of sleep. Of course as we have explored already on this site, this is not the case. As you are not asleep you will never have a problem with waking up!
How many sessions will I need?
It is impossible for me to tell you here how many sessions you will need, many treatments such as smoking cessation will take only one session, some problems with a deep routed cause can take three or four sessions to sort through, this will become clearer after the initial session.
Will Hypnotherapy definately work for me?
Hypnotherapy when compared to some other therapies has a very good success rate, but hypnotherapy is only a tool to help you to work through the problem. If you don't want to make the changes, then the changes won't happen regardless of the skill of the therapist.
What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
This is a great question, and the answer will differ slightly for everyone, but basically the state of hypnosis feels like being really relaxed, a bit like day dreaming, with the focus of your mind on the therapist's words. Often a person will feel like their hearing is more acute, and that they feel very chilled out. Some people will feel physical changes a dry mouth or even a moist mouth, some people will get slightly watery eyes, some will feel a sense of warmth across parts of their bodies. Because of the misconceptions about hypnosis, some people believe they are going to be entranced or fall asleep, and when they feel aware, they panic that they are not in a state of hypnosis and do not get all the benefits. This is why it is really important to understand what to expect. This way you will get maximum benefit from your session.
